SOUTH AUSTIN. With its lively purple and lime green exterior, Bouldin Creek offers a perk before you even walk in the door. Inside, you'll find a bright, inviting space with ample room for studying, reading, or chatting with friends. Of course, a coffee house must have great java, and Bouldin Creek does, along with a tasty vegetarian menu and a good selection of teas, beers, and wines. NORTH AUSTIN. This neighborhood café and espresso bar features sumptuous homemade gelato and premium coffees. Open late.

UNIVERSITY AREA. In days gone by, an airport was near this coffee shop's location ­ hence its name. The place is especially popular with studious folks, who appreciate its spaciousness, good lighting, WiFi access, and relaxed atmosphere. The menu covers all the bases, from good coffee drinks to quiches and pastries. There's even wine and beer should you need a reward for good work habits.

BARTON SPRINGS DISTRICT. Not just a coffeehouse, Flipnotics juggles several roles and, happily, gets them all right. The enterprise, like many Austin coffeehouses, occupies a former home ­ in this case, a 1960s split level. On one floor is a funky clothing store, and on another is the actual coffee house. It's not your ordinary coffee-and-pastry shop, though. Of course, there's good coffee, sandwiches, and muffins, but you'll also find steaks, pastas, burgers, and vegetarian options, along with wine and beer. WAREHOUSE DISTRICT. The one thing you can't help but notice about Austin is its eclectic blend of people and personalities, which exist in seeming harmony. This coffeehouse is one of the places that best exemplifies that simple truth. As you sip a cup of, perhaps, Vietnamese coffee, you're sure to see everyone from conservative business people to trendy Gen-Xers.
